Baggers Storms Monsoon
Young designer and entrepreneur 29 year old Jessica McCarthy, the wife of international rugby player Mike McCarthy has just secured a deal to sell the first branded products into global retailer Monsoon, with a fun rainwear product. This will be the first time in Monsoon's 40 year history that they have sold a brand other than their own.
Jessica who also works as a part time model, launched Baggers Original after being the child model for the company in the late 80's, when her mother Angela first launched the brand making waterproof jackets and trousers that fold into an inside pocket for Jessica then aged 5 years old.
"When my Mother first had the business - the brand was so popular and the products in such high demand that the business grew too quickly - causing massive cash flow problems - and it ceased trading in the early 90's" said Jessica. "The company then, won many national awards and the products which all fold into an inside pocket to form an easy to carry bag were loved by parents and children alike. I have always wanted to re-launch the brand - learning from mistakes made first time around."
Jessica was invited to meet David Cameron at Number 10 last year and then later invited to speak at the Conservative Party Conference to show case her new business start-up. She still runs her first business Garbeau, producing made to measure shirts and suits for men which she started seven years ago, after graduating from Northumbria University with a degree in Fashion.
Jessica re-launched Baggers Originals after 25 years selling on-line the boys and girls rainwear from ages 1-2 up to 7-8 years. Last year Jessica appeared on the BBC programme Be Your Own Boss and realised the importance of getting the brand into a major retailer. After working with Monsoon for several months, Baggers Originals will be available for sale in Monsoon's top 25 stores globally at the end of August this year and online at the Monsoon website.
A spokesperson from Monsoon’s buying team Sara Maton said “Baggers Originals is a fun, practical product that both parents and children love. It is very exciting as this is the first time Monsoon have ever collaborated with another brand. We are using one of our statement heritage prints on the Baggers Originals rainwear design which makes them an extra special product. We are delighted to support Jessica as a young entrepreneur with the launch of her brand. Jessica fits with our demographic and the mother/daughter story is inspirational."
Angela, Jessica's mother works alongside her daughter and the story of the re-launch is presented as a story for children to read in their own book when they buy the products. Baggers Originals are due to launch additional products including a swimwear range following the same concept on their website and into retailers for Spring 2015.
Sir Richard Branson has also supported the company stating how “ingenious” the products are and expressing an interest in stocking the swimwear range on Neckar Island.
