Debbie McCordall: Accentuate HR
“I set myself a target that once I had 20 years’ experience, I would set up my own consultancy. I am now living the dream!” Debbie McCordall’s start-up journey united a long-term ambition with earned expertise. Her firm, Accentuate HR, puts people at the heart of organisational solutions.
From a young age, Debbie wanted to work in the Human Resources sector, going on to carve herself out an impressive career in the industry - working with large public organisations and private sector corporates. However, Debbie didn’t see herself working for other people forever, instead aiming to go self-employed when she hit the level of experience she felt would enable her to start her own successful venture.
In January 2016, Debbie founded Accentuate HR, her own HR services business. The company works with clients to realise their objectives through people – promoting compliance, cost saving and helping them get the best out of their staff.
Confident in her knowledge and passion for HR, Debbie found the unfamiliar territory of planning and running a business required new skills, some which brought their own challenges. She turned to the PNE Enterprise team for one-to-one mentoring to help her develop ideas and identify solutions, including training and developing new networks.
“I had no sales experience and no experience of working with social media. I did not come across the word “blog” until I set up my business! Melissa told me to “network until I lost my voice” for 3 months, which I did and met the most amazing people and contacts.
“I also put myself through sales training and worked with the amazing Melissa Middleton from PNE, Nicola Jayne Little from Sparkle Communications and Karol Marketing to increase my online presence.”
Developing her businesses brand and communications imprint was a highlight for Debbie, who considers the development of her website, new found online presence and opportunities grown through networking some of her biggest achievements since launching her venture. She encourages new business owners that persistence is the key, “Every contact you make turns into new and exciting opportunities.”
Commenting on the support she received from PNE, Debbie said, “Melissa was so supportive in those early days and continues to be today. She set me out into the networking world and helped develop my social media presence.”
