Paul Hunt: Dark Skies

An architectural firm has opened its doors in County Durham after receiving business support from PNE Enterprise.

Launched in March 2018, Dark Skies Design are an architectural and design firm offering their services to both homeowners and commercial clients.

From interior design to house extensions, and from landscaping to conversions, the small team at Dark Skies Design boast an impressive portfolio of work.

For Dark Skies Design, living and working more sustainably, and supporting clients to, is at the core of their business model. This is achieved through the creation of affordable energy efficient buildings that are designed using renewable technologies.

Leading the business is Paul Hunt, an experienced architect who launched Dark Skies Design to become his own boss.

“I wanted to be my own boss to allow flexible working hours and to ensure full control of the type of projects I undertake. I’m passionate about providing a tailored service for all my clients and through my business I am able to do this.”

For Paul, launching is business required a significant amount of preparation, though on reflection, Paul notes that this was fundamental to Dark Skies Design’s launch.

“The start-up process took a little longer than originally anticipated but I’ve gained invaluable knowledge of running a business, even before trading officially started! In my view, it’s better to delay the launch of your business until you are fully prepared.”

To acquire the knowledge and skills to run a business, Paul attended PNE Enterprise’s 2 Day Business Course – an intensive business course designed for pre-start businesses.

“The workshops at PNE Enterprise were very useful in gaining an overview and highlighted the gaps in our existing knowledge,” comments Paul. “It showed the importance of realising when you should take professional advice and that you can’t do everything yourself.”

“Having a business mentor that you can call or email has been incredibly helpful especially when you need a second opinion before making a key decision which may impact the overall direction of the business.”

Melissa said, “Paul was fantastic as a student in our courses but also as a supporter to other individuals setting up in business. He is going to have an amazing business future and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with him on his journey.”
